I designed and built this executive desk from domestic black walnut for a doctor in the St. Louis area. The challenge was to provide as much storage space and as many useful working surfaces as possible without overwhelming the small office. Each of the three desk pedestals (the boxes that hold the drawers) has a file drawer and two smaller drawers, as well as an extra pullout work surface. Because doctors typically have lots of papers on their desks, I used a rare "curly" walnut veneer on the fronts of the drawers to add visual interest to the vertical surfaces. Fluted columns border the drawer fronts and inlaid Australian lacewood (the lighter wood at the tops of the columns) adds a little color contrast to the dark walnut facade...
