Cherry Side Table
This table brings the best craftsmanship of the past together with an original design.
Some things to notice: The legs are not square, they're parallelograms, shaped to match the curve of the piece. The wood on the drawer fronts is cherry crotch, from inside the "V" of a cherry tree. The crotch is book-matched: sequential sections of the crotch are set end-to-end to create a mirror image. The crotch bookmatches are bound by ebonized stringing.
The drawer fronts match the radius of the front, shaped from thick, solid planks and hand-dovetailed to the sides. Most of the work in this table cannot be seen now. It's in the traditional way the carcass was put together with dovetails and mortise and tenon joints. There were no compromises in the design or construction of this table - a rare and challenging commission.
